Expeditions to Asian Russia

In the second half of the 18th century, the Russian Academy of Science first undertook a series of expeditions to all parts of the Russian Empire.

The purpose of these was to scientifically describe the nature, natural resources, economy and population in remote corners of Russia.

A number of Western European academics, who were inspired by the philosophers of the Enlightenment, were also party to these research expeditions.
